Mina S. Makary, MD, has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor — the second year he has received the prestigious Top Doctor honor.

COLUMBUS, OH, January 31, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Mina S. Makary, MD, has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor — the second year he has received the prestigious Top Doctor honor. Only about 7 percent of the nation’s licensed physicians are selected annually as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties.

Dr. Makary is a vascular and interventional radiologist with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

A Fellow of both the Society of Vascular Medicine and the American Heart Association, Dr. Makary is dual board-certified in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Makary specializes in interventional oncology, complex hepatobiliary care, genitourinary interventions, venous disease and reconstruction, visceral arterial disorders, women’s health including uterine fibroid care, pain management, vascular and dialysis access, novel therapies including prostatic and genicular artery embolization, and diagnostic imaging. He performs cutting-edge minimally invasive approaches to provide patients with better outcomes, shorter recovery time, and reduced complications.

He particularly enjoys taking care of cancer patients and providing comprehensive care from the initial biopsy and chemotherapy port placement to locoregional therapies —including transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), transarterial embolization (TAE), and transarterial radioembolization (TARE) — and ablations to palliative therapies. He employs an interdisciplinary approach to provide patients with an individualized treatment plan and the best possible care.

Dr. Makary also has special expertise in advanced venous interventions including endovascular reconstructions of chronically occluded veins, management of deep venous thrombosis and IVC filters, as well as parathyroid venous sampling, and he has been recognized for his pioneering work in all three areas. Additionally, he has a particular interest in minimally invasive embolization therapy for symptomatic uterine fibroids and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

“I firmly believe that it’s a privilege to be a part of the care of each patient and their treatment journey,” Dr. Makary says. “My care philosophy is centered around listening to my patients, addressing their individual concerns and simply treating them as I would want a member of my family treated. I partner with each patient so together we can achieve their personal treatment goals. It’s very important to me that my patients have a positive experience from beginning to end.”

“It’s a true joy and privilege to be able to serve patients with these conditions and have the opportunity to develop individualized treatment plans that meet their needs and provide them with the best care possible. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and treat thousands of patients from across the U.S. as well as internationally, and I deeply appreciate the relationships we developed and their trust in my care.”

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Makary serves on the faculty of the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He currently serves as the Director of Scholarly Activity and Research in the Department of Radiology, the Director of Interventional Radiology Inpatient Service, and the Director of the Interventional Radiology Clerkship. He also serves in a variety of leadership roles in institutional and national committees to help contribute to the advancement of the field and advocate for patients and their medical needs.

Originally from Columbus, he obtained his medical doctorate and completed both interventional and diagnostic radiology training at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he served as a chief resident.

Dr. Makary has authored over 200 scholarly papers, abstracts, and book chapters, as well as presented at national and regional conferences on the latest interventional therapies. He has been recognized for his contributions by prestigious research honors, academic awards, and grants, and his innovative work has been featured in multiple news media outlets. He has also been rated in the top 10 percent of physicians in the nation for patient satisfaction.

Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.

“I’m extremely honored and humbled to consistently get nominated by my peers for this recognition,” Dr. Makary says. “It’s a reflection of the high-quality care that my team and I strive to deliver to each patient in every encounter we have every day.”
