Inspired by the life of San Francisco disco queen Sylvester, Broadway veteran Anthony Wayne (“Pippin,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”) and Kendrell Bowman wrote, put together the creative team and hit every fundraising source from friends to the cloud to put up their bio-musical celebration of a unique Castro district African American performing arts icon in the style to which the former Cockette was accustomed.

“Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical” had a well-received off-Broadway run in 2014 and a celebratory outing at theBrava Theater in the town Sylvester had made his home, with Wayne in the title role. Now, as the creators plan to move onto Broadway, it’s back for a recap. Tonight’s performance is a benefit for the S.F. AIDS Emergency Fund.
